Loss Health Trials Basis of Ketogenic Diet PlanLow carb ketogenic diets, such as Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution, are based on a severe restriction of calories from carbohydrates. In the absence of carbs, the body switches to fat (instead of carbohydrate) for its fuel source and converts fat into energy. This process of fat-metabolism, sometimes referred to as gluconeogenesis, produces ketones or ketone-bodies in the bloodstream - ketosis - hence the name "ketogenic diet." Ketosis tends to reduce hunger, which - allied to the fact that very-low-carb diets tend to contain fewer calories - contributes to weight reduction. Ketogenic Diets Offer Faster Weight LossLow carb ketogenic weight loss diets tend to produce faster weight loss, over (say) a six month period, than more orthodox lower-fat diets. One reason for this, is the loss of water-weight caused by depletion of glycogen in the liver and muscle cells. (Glycogen is the body's carb-based liquid glucose energy source.) Point is, about three parts of water are stored with one part of glycogen. So the less carb-glycogen we have, the less water and the less weight. However, weight loss on ketogenic diets tends to slow down after six months, and by twelve months, weight reduction on a low carb diet is approximately the same as for a lower fat diet regimen.
