GI Value For DrinksDrinks and The Glycemic Index (GI)High energy sports drinks have a high-GI value as they are designed to raise blood glucose levels very fast in order to replace calories expended in vigorous exercise. In the absence of such energy expenditure they are not suitable for any low-GI eating plan. Regular soft drinks and sodas fall into the same category as high energy or sports drinks. Alcohol (except beer) contains very few carbs and thus has a low-GI value. However alcohol is an "empty-calorie" food - meaning, it contains calories but almost no nutrition. As a result, over-drinking can contribute to weight gain.
